How to make a double link jump ring chain.
Double link jump ring chain
Step #1
Making jump rings. You will need to use at about a 20 gauge wire for a sturdy ring. Wrap the wire in a tight coil around your wooden dowel. Take care not to let the wire overlap itself. If you would prefer not to make each individual jump ring yourself you can click on the links above to purchase them ready to use.
Step #2
Pull the wire coil off of the dowel. You will likely have a bit of straight wire at the end of the coil that you couldn't fully form around the dowel. Using the wire cutters snip the wire at a point where it begins to make a nice coil. discard the tail bit that you just cut off. Place the wire cutters at the edge of the cut you just made and snip the next ring at that point. This will cut off a circular ring. The cut tips of the ring will be slightly twisted open. You will leave the rings open for now. Continue cutting the coil until you have the desired number of rings. Using a small diameter dowel/pencil you should require 10-12 rings per inch of chain.
Step #3
Load 2 closed rings into 2 open rings. Each set of rings 2 should be perpendicular (rotated 90 degrees) to the previous set. Close all of the rings by twisting the rings with your fingers until the ends of each ring meet together. Add another set of 2 rings to the chain and continue in this fashion until you have a chain of the desired length. I would not recommend doing this as a single ring chain. A single ring chain is just not strong enough may deform or break when pulled.
